Saving Money by Living Green

You opened your mailbox to find the envelopes of the things that you dread the most - bills. It is that time of the month again where you have to fix your finances just to get all of those dues paid and doing so is not actually that pleasant. But there is no way out of it. As much as you want to run and avoid it, you just cannot. Water and electricity supply are already considered as two of the basic needs of men. Without them, your life would be very inconvenient.

Although there is absolutely no way to free yourself from that responsibility, the great thing is that there are hundreds of steps that you can do to at least lower the cost that you have to pay. The secret? It is all about living a green lifestyle. Here are some tips that might come handy to you:

  1. Yellow lights are great to add depth and relaxing ambiance to your room. They can even make your place a bit warmer. However, they consume too much energy which can make your bills more expensive. Now that you have vertical radiators to neutralise the temperature, maybe it is about time that you replace your illumination fixtures with the fluorescent bulbs. They may cost a little more expensive that the standard one but they have a life span of at least seven years and they only use a fraction of energy.
  2. Saving water can be a bit tricky since it is hard to tell how much you have consumed plus most of the household activities often uses this. One thing that you can do is to put an empty bottle of soda in your toilet tank. Doing so will help you reduce the amount of liquid used per flush. Moreover, did you know that the hygienic act of brushing your teeth can make you use a whole lot of this vital fluid? Also, do not dump your toilet paper in the bowl. Get yourself a garbage bin and throw it there. Next time you clean your pearly whites, be sure to use a glass instead of letting the tap run. Finally, you can also save a lot of money by recycling water.
  3. For your electric appliances, make sure you unplug them if they are not used. Turning them off is not enough since they still consume a bit of energy. So, if it is not really necessary to use your vertical radiators, see to it that they are not connected to the outlet. For your refrigerator, it can save you a lot of pounds if you do not open it ever so often. And do not store too much water or food in there as those things increase energy consumption.
  4. It also pays to check your home insulation. Go for column radiators rather than those big and bulky heating machines. Not only do they consume less power, they also do no take much space in your house. These things can even serve as an accessory to your room!
  5. Taking a shower especially during the cold months of winter can be really difficult for a lot of people. Most of them have to turn their electric heater to the fullest to help them have a more comfortable and relaxing bath time. However, doing that is expensive. What you can do is to put the water into a lukewarm temperature and allow you body to get used to it. It would not be as bad. Finally, you can make use of towel radiators to wipe you body with warm cloth.
  6. Instead of using those expensive mechanical air purifiers, bring in a couple of potted plants inside the room. They are cheap, they do not consume electricity plus they look great in your interiors! One thing that you need to remember though is to go for the low-maintenance once so that you do not have to trim the leaves and take them out every single day.
  7. The lovely season of summer is also another time of the year when water and power consumption goes up. To save yourself from dizzying bills, you might want to keep your electric heating elements for radiators. Instead of turning on your air conditioning unit, just open all your windows and use your ceiling fan. It may not provide you the coolness you wanted but it can help you achieve a more bearable temperature. It also helps that you put on clothing that are made of light materials and colours.
  8. To help you do your chores in inexpensive ways, it is best that you go back to the old days. It might be a little inconvenient but it surely can save you a couple of pounds. For instance, you can just hang your clothes and let it dry on its own rather than using electric dryer. Also, if you iron your garments, you do not have to do it on your house clothes or your sleeping attire. When doing the dishes, do not let the water run as you rinse them. Rather, you can fill your other sink or a basin with water. When cleaning your pavements or driveway, make use of a broomstick rather than a water hose. It can also be a great way to remove all the dirt in those nooks and crannies but it does not cost you a thing.
  9. Aside from the electric and water bills, you are more likely to spend a lot on your grocery items. One way to cut down your expenses is to plant your own herbs and veggies. This might require a lot of hard work but it can save you a whole lot of money. Just stick with the basic greeneries and go for the ones that do not require much tending. Examples are chives, parsley, mint, rosemary and basil. You can also grow some of those mini tomatoes that are perfect for your salad!

Living a green life is all about going back to the basics and adapting a simpler lifestyle. It might be hard at first with all the adjustments that you have to make but in time you will get the hang of it. With this, not only are you sparing your pockets from a great damage but you are also contributing to the wellness of Mother Nature.
